Science and the Early Maori

Science and the Early Maori

Name : Cooking

How was Science involved ? :  The Maoris say that while cooking the food they had
to use science but how you might ask ? ...    For cooking you need to know how to
start the fire and even how long to cook it for. In Cooking science can also be used for
most measurements because if you get the measurement wrong it could cause a chemical
reaction.

Example: If you were going to bake a cake you would have the batter in the pan
but you would need to know how much time you put it in the oven and ow you
know when it's cooked because we are all not wanting to ear a half cooked cake .
Another example … They had to experiment on what to put on it like if your
cooking chicken you would have to experiment on what flavours go together
without it making it taste bad.

Definition of Cooking :Food that has been prepared in a particular way, And that is
edible.

Definition of science  : A systematically organised body of knowledge on a particular
subject, And with experiments.

Name : Building
You might ask ‘How is building used in Science for the Maori?’:
Well Science can be used for knowing which angles and where you need to put
the equipment like Wood, vines and Rocks.  As the Maoris were hunting and
trying to live they also had to try and build hunting tools and huts. They also
had to get the right wood and the right equipment to make sure it will make you
dry and will stay up right.

For Example the Maoris would have to keep trying and trying over and over
again to get it right. It’s just like if you were to try something new and new
around knew what to do you would have to just think and try over again for like
a long time. Also Building has to do with science because you will have to test all
of the wood to see if it could handle the weather and when they would grow to know
when to build it.

Definition of Building: a structure with a roof and walls, such as a house or factory.

Name : Food Growing

Science is involved with Food Growing because of all the testing you would
have to do. You would also have to take risk and eat foods to see if they are able
to be eaten. In science you have to take a lot of risks and in food growing you have
to as well because you would have to try and find the best place and the best time to
plant the food. Sometimes the Maoris would have to risk there breakfast lunch and
dinner because they could have planted there plant in the wrong place or in the wrong
season.

Example: Everyday the Maoris would walk around the woods and try new food to eat
or plant then at the end of the day they would plant them and hope it would grow and
be healthy.

"Locally grown" refers to food and other agricultural products for example, wool or
flowers that are grown or produced, processed and then sold within a certain area.
However, there's no standard definition of "local," and so businesses touting their
"locally grown products" may be using very different definitions.
